Review: How a Small Worm is Helping Uncover the Pathogenicity of Gene Variants

We have previously discussed how the advancement of genomics technology has led to an increase in variants of unknown significance (VUS), and how important it is to identify whether or not they are disease-causing. In this review we discuss a recent publication from Dr. Oliver Blacque and collaborators (Lange et al., 2022), where they leveraged …

A Natural Fit – Using Zebrafish to Evaluate Natural Compounds for Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Summary Inflammation’s role in diseases has become increasingly apparent, with inflammatory responses being linked to diseases as common as arthritis, and as debilitating as Parkinson’s. A promising way to counteract inflammation is through natural compounds – currently these compounds are being tested on the well-suited alternative animal model, zebrafish. In this article we discuss the …

Differences Between HDR vs NHEJ

Summary The CRISPR-Cas9 system has become integral in the toolbelts of genomic scientists, researchers, students, etc. Never has it been so easy to wield a pair of molecular scissors in your (pipetting) hand, however, there are a few intracellular processes to consider before cutting up your genome of interest. In this article, we will give …

The Benefits of Standardizing Zebrafish Diets

We recently were asked to procure a special zebrafish diet, which got us thinking about zebrafish diets overall. Once we started researching this custom diet, we realized that the zebrafish diet is more complicated than one might think. There are many considerations that go into a zebrafish diet, as it is not yet standardized. Currently, …

COVID-19’s Impact on Working Parents

While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us all, it isn’t a mystery that it has disproportionately impacted parents who have faced added stress, work-from-home situations, and unpredictable school / daycare closures. A recent article in Science stressed that the pandemic was particularly disruptive for parents working in a scientific field, and that these effects would be felt for years into the future – as it takes approximately three years for research to go from the concept-stage to publication. Here at InVivo Biosystems our parents are reflecting on the challenges and triumphs they have faced over the last two years.
