C. elegans Behavior & Phenotyping Capabilities

C. elegans Behavior & Phenotyping

Measuring Metal Toxicity

Used for whole-animal toxicology and safety testing to quantify adverse effects of chemical substances (e.g., environmental pollutants, drugs) on living organisms.

Measuring metal toxicity. Red fluorescence is induced in animals exposed to Cadmium.

  • APPLICATIONS

Can be used to study toxic effects on whole organisms and uncover gene/environment interactions. Performing tests on C. elegans reduces the use of mammals in toxicology testing.

  • ASSAY DESCRIPTION

The exposure to cadmium, lead, and other toxic metals induces a fluorescent response in the biosensor C. elegans.

  • DATA COLLECTED

Environmental samples are tested and the fluorescence intensity is measured using a population of worms. Worm number is normalized by using a constitutively expressed GFP.
